ETS TOEIC WRITING – TEST 1 (Q3)

Do you agree or disagree with following statement?
Children are influenced more by teachers than by parents.

SAMPLE ANSWER:

Children tend to spend a significant amount of time with parents and teachers during their early years. Some people think that children are influenced more by teachers than by parents. However, I do not agree with this opinion for the following reasons.
The main reason why I believe young children receive more impact from their parents than their teachers is because of the unbreakable bond between parents and their children from birth. Parents give birth to their children and bring them up at a young age. Throughout the years, they teach their children the habits or values they need in their daily lives. Our parents are our very first teachers. We naturally and unconsciously absorb positive and negative traits from our parents. This process will continue until we become fully grown adults. Some people even follow their parents’ advice or values in their seventies or eighties. Therefore, family plays a vital role in children’s development.
Another reason is that parents know their children better because they spend more time with them during the day. A teacher has to manage a large class with over forty students. Hence, it is challenging for them to pay attention to each student. While parents only have a few children to take care of individually, it is easier for them to remember their children’s characteristics, hobbies, or interests. By doing this, parents can give the correct rewards or punishments to their children and encourage them to express themselves better. In the school, teachers are only responsible for a class for one school year, and some teachers only teach one subject at a time. As a result, the time they have to interact with each student is quite limited.
To sum up, although some teachers can dramatically change students’ mindsets or influence heavily the way students think about the world, there are only a few of them. On the other hand, parents are the people who play a significant role in shaping children’s perceptions and building values that children can use later in their lives.
